The Cubs led 1-0 at halftime, but Knoxville stayed within striking distance and had chances late in the half to equalize. Nevada pulled away in the second half, however, scoring three times in quick succession.
“We had some opportunities in the first half to get a goal back, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net,” Knoxville head coach John Smith said. “Credit to Nevada for coming out focused in the second half and putting the game away.”
Despite the loss, Smith said he was proud of his team’s effort and progress this season. Knoxville loses just three seniors, so the bulk of the roster will return next year with valuable postseason experience.
“We’re a young team, and getting a taste of the substate final will only make the guys hungrier for next season,” Smith said. “The future is bright for Knoxville soccer.”
