Latest shooting leaves one critical

An overnight shooting in West Knoxville left one person with life-threatening injuries while police sought leads and asked for the public’s help.

Just after midnight Tuesday a report of gunfire came into the E-911 call center, and dispatchers sent Knoxville Police Department officers to check out the area near the intersection of Piney Grove Church Road and Middlebrook Pike, according to KPD spokesman Scott Erland.

The officers found a male victim in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 944 Piney Grove Church Road, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Erland said.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, the shooting is not believed to be random in nature,” Erland said.

The victim, who wasn’t identified, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the KPD Crime and Drug Hotline at 865-215-7212 or send an email to Tips can be submitted anonymously.

The shooting was the latest episode of violence that has seen a record number of people killed in Knoxville over the past 14 months.

There were 37 homicides in the city in 2020, more than the previous all-time high of 35 in 1998.

Since Jan. 1 of this year, there have been 13 slayings, all of them involving firearms.

By this time last year, there had been only three homicides.
